Commercial drivers as well as long distance drivers are legally obliged to follow certain rules and regulations while plying on the road. Without rules and regulations accidents would be rampant and in order to bring some semblance of order the drivers hours rules has been created to regulate the activities of drivers of commercial vehicles. These drivers hours guidelines lay down rules for the number of hours you can play on the road and the mandatory amount of rest that you should take. Complying with this rule ensures that you have adequate rest so that your driving ability is not hampered. This helps to avoid accidents to a large extent.
Drivers hours limit the time that you can drive to a maximum of 9 hours. You can choose to extend this time to 10 hours twice in a week. Thus the weekly drivers hours amount to a maximum of 56 hours. It is mandatory to take rest for 45minutes if you are driving for 4.5 hours at a stretch.  Under the drivers hours guidelines you are required to take rest for a period of 11 consecutive hours. The reduced duration for rest is 9 hours which you can repeat 3 times a week. These strict rules and regulations ensure that the commercial drivers are in the proper physical and mental state when they are plying on the road.
